In 2001 she appeared at the Monarch hotel with Big Ray and the Kool Kats, and at her weekly show "Jazz Under the Stars" at Moondance Cafe in her hometown, Charlottesville, Virginia. Her first independent production, the CD
"I am Helane Fontaine" was recorded in a traditional style with no edits, overdubs or multi-tracking. Backed by the George Turner Jazz Trio, with Bob Bowen on bass and Aaron Binder on drums, Helane used the live format in various living rooms to create the warmth presence found in many earlier recordings of the greatest jazz vocalists.
